Welcome to Poplar House School

Poplar House School is an Independent Special School for young people with autistic spectrum conditions aged 11-18 years old.

​

We are located in Lytham Saint Annes, near Blackpool and benefit from strong community links with close proximity to the local beaches which support our environmental studies as part of our drive to gaining our Beach School accreditation status in addition to students being able to access academic and vocational pathways.

Our Vision

Our vision is to help children and young people to develop their social, independence and education skills so they can fulfil their aspirations and potential.

 

Poplar House School offers a range of bespoke high quality educational care for young people within a safe and homely environment and has been specifically designed to support individuals in leading active and independent lives.

 

We empower and inspire young people to make the right choices in pursuit of their passion and happiness, through a broad and bespoke curriculum.

 

With dedicated staff, a unique approach and purpose-built facilities; we provide a supportive, safe and happy environment where all young people make progress regardless of ability level.

Curriculum

Poplar House School has an enhanced curriculum which is designed to support the specific individual needs of our young people.  We have adopted the National Curriculum to underpin our education programme.  We run a thematic curriculum alongside the core National Curriculum subject areas which has been built on in order to enrich and support young people to achieve to the best of their ability within the wide context of the academic curriculum with a wide and balanced offer.

 

Our curriculum is individualised to the needs of our pupil’s complex needs and is creative allowing flexibility in approach and environment to meet the needs of all our pupils wide and varying interests.

We have a focus on recognising the achievements of all our pupils be that academic or in the broader context, offering pupils the opportunity to learn about life , its challenges, and opportunities and how progression in all areas is a measure of success to be recognised and celebrated.

Our Environment

Poplar House School provides the best physical environment for the special education needs of pupils.

Our newly refurbished building in January 2023 with specialist facilities, which provides a spacious, calm and safe environment in which young people can thrive and learn.

Such facilities fully support our creative learning curriculum and a “Total Communication” approach to education. We utilise various communications systems which is led by our SENCo and Speech and Language Therapists.

State-of-the-art classrooms and specialist facilities

Classrooms are equipped with state-of-the-art education technology such as interactive touch screens which you would expect to find in any modern school. Many of our specialist facilities support the sensory diet requirements of pupils, that is, sight, sound, touch and smell to develop their senses, co-ordination and communication, promoting interaction, concentration, calmness and confidence.

 

Sensory Room

Designed to stimulate and support the children’s sensory needs and motor skills. The young people can use the equipment to manage their own arousal levels

Life skills room

Pupils are supported to develop independent living skills including cooking in a home style setting, cleaning and washing up.

 

Music, art and drama room

We have a fully stocked music and art rooms to allow the young person to develop their creativity. Performing arts allows young people to express themselves within a safe environment.
